DarkBASIC Convention 2005

Another year, another DarkBASIC convention held in the convenient location of Chichester. There were some good talks by Philip, Mike and Lee, especially the showcase of the new physics system they're implementing. People got drunk, we played Unreal Tournament, and there was lots of DarkBASIC code to be showcased and discussed.

The guys socialising in the bar the night before. Philip bought drinks for everyone when he arrived.

In the bar

Lagmaster

Lagmaster..

..was having a bit of trouble..

On the floor

Too much drink

..with his drink.

Wolf showing off his stuff to BatVink, Nick, Scraggle and Mnem. The first talk was by Philip, on the subject of contract law. I found it rather interesting, and later purchased some expensive orange juice.

BatVink, Mike, IanM, Scraggle

BatVink demonstrating something to Mike, IanM and Scraggle. Mike's talk was on the new physics system being introduced into DBPro. It looks really impressive and features among other things:

Dynamic cloth meshes - spheres were flying in and causing the banner to billow out

Cloth

Destructible structure

Breakable joints - this scaffold was being bombarded with spheres until it collapsed

Vehicle physics - very simple to set these up in DBPro programs

Car smashing through a wall

Ragdolls falling to their doom

Ragdoll characters - with breakable limbs

Lee gives us the lowdown on importing FPSCreator levels into DarkBASIC.

Lee, Moggie, Nick

Lee, tuna sandwich, Moggie, Nick

Professional as ever with sandwich in hand, there's a Q&A session. Bear in mind Lee didn't awaken until at least 5pm.

After the talks there are more demonstrations, then it's off to KFC for food. BatVink is failing to meet the high orange juice demand.

Mike, Jason, Scraggle, BatVink

Mnem and IanM with big guns

Back for some Unreal Tournament, Mnemonix is far too good at this.

A bit later on Moggie and I play some co-op Jazz Jackrabbit 2, while Lag gets started on his screensaver for the competition.

Moggie and Lag

Nick, Mnem, Lag

Nick finds something amusing.

The next day, Moggie and Lag have already finished their screensavers while I code away.

Mnem, BatVink, Moggie

Oooh, swirly

Beginning as a traffic simulator, I abandon my attempts at 15 minutes to the deadline and create a particle engine instead. The screensaver consists of a whirly vortex thing with some other random particles whizzing around. Moggie wins the competition and a cartload of IBM books.
