Retro Ball 2005

The Retro Ball was an event hosted by Play 4 Charity, held in Kenilworth on the 3rd and 4th December.

The main bit was a room full of arcade machines, all on free play. Several people completed Time Crisis while I was there.

More guns

More guns = more fun, especially when they're machine guns. Operation Wolf 3 was a great game, despite (or perhaps because of..)

Loads of retro gear

There were loads of old games and consoles for sale, I managed to pick up Donkey Kong Country, Starwing and Jet Force Gemini. There was a rare Nintendo Visual Boy, but it was too expensive for me.

As well as arcade machines and old consoles there was a section of pinball machines.

Pachinko machines

And some of those crazy flashing japanese pachinko machines. These were on sale too, for hundreds of pounds.

I got back into some classic Goldeneye action, generally trashing people. We had a few rounds of Mario Kart 64 too.

There were also some Gamecubes, so I played some other people at Super Smash Bros and Donkey Konga.

This machine has white vector graphics, and uses a transparent overlay to get the colours on the screen.

Retro Remakes Competition

Blitz Games were sponsoring a Retro Remakes competition for this event. Bob assembled a quick team from the VGDS and made a jetpack game in a week, despite coursework.

To their surprise, the game acheived 3rd place in the competition! They were the proud new owners of shiny framed certificates, a Blitz mug and a Nintendo DS complete with Mario Kart.

Well done team! From front to back - Nico (artwork), Dunk (music) and Bob (coding and sleep deprivation), and Philip Oliver from Blitz giving the prize.

After waiting 45 minutes for a bus, giving up and walking away, it drove past us as we ran towards it from the midpoint between two bus stops. There were no taxis available, so we embarked on the trek home. Through a forest.

Warwick Uni

An hour and a half later, we were back in familiar territory, with only a further half hour walk to my house.
