Skydive for charity

The journey there was.. eventful to say the least. To begin with one of the cars failed its MOT, so there were too many people for too few cars. One girl in the boot later, and an 8am call to the insurance company to get one of our drivers insured and we were off. After Google Maps started us off in completely the wrong direction, we decided to follow the AA instructions we also had printed off.

All was going well (except 'the roundabout incident', and the quickest motorway exit from the inside lane ever™) until we reached the end of the instructions. It looked right, there were lots of flat fields and few clouds, perfect for a bit of plummeting to the ground. Except, no skydive centre. Just a meat factory.

What the...

What the...

It turned out the skydive centre was 50 miles in the direction from which we'd just came. Cheers, AA. We think someone entered the wrong postcode or something. Back we went..

A handy map

Chocks away! Stylish.

2 hours later, that's 5 hours total journey time, we arrived just in time to miss the group of skydivers from Durham Uni. At least we didn't have to wait too long to get going. A quick intro video and practice of the body positioning needed followed by a stylish blue jumpsuit and hat then we were on our way.

It didn't really strike me that I was actually going to jump out of a plane until we were in the air.

Getting ready

I wasn't worried though, even when the door was opened and the people in front of me started jumping out. The jumping itself wasn't as stomach-wrenching as I'd imagined, it's not as noticeable as a rollercoaster, for example. The best bit was when we'd stopped tumbling, and I could see this huge cloudscape stretching around me, then realised that it was accelerating towards me at incredible speed. Rather, I was accelerating towards it, when we hit the clouds at around 120mph the instructor opened the parachute.

Floating down

The next few minutes were spent slowly descending to earth. It's really peaceful up there, you can't hear much in the way of noise (maybe because my ears had exploded when I was yanked up by the parachute).

The minature buildings and fields soon appeared larger as we flew over the skydive centre to land rather ungracefully in the area just in front of the hangar. We desuited, then all that was left was to wait for the final group of people.

Landing

Back to base

For £85, Ollie had had a camerawoman accompany him and shoot a video of his jump (not pictured).

The journey back took only 2 and a half hours, including the time to stop and film a comedy 'pile everyone out of the car' routine. Then it was on to The Bar for pizza.

Me, Ollie, Marc, Peter, Tom, Matt
Benjamin, Peet (the guy who organised all this)
Stu, Sarah, Tom and Kate.

We jumped out of a plane!
